The stage was set, the audience was excited, and minds were primed for an intellectual journey as TEDx Bradenton presented its inspiring event, Writing the Future.

This gathering brought together thinkers, innovators, and visionaries from various walks of life to share their profound insights and ideas that are reshaping the future.

The event took place at the State College of Florida in Bradenton, Florida, a fitting venue for an event that aimed to explore the limitless possibilities of human creativity.

Speakers each brought unique perspectives on how we can collectively write a brighter future. Here are some highlights from the event.

  1. Elma Felix – Urban and Regional Planner of Maker of Places – Elma started the event by reflecting on her childhood love of Sesame Street. She asked the audience to close their eyes and think of a place that makes us feel safe and good about who we are. Then, she emphasized how spaces can inspire change, drive innovation, and create a better world. Through various global projects at every scale, her interests are livable communities, sustainable development, and public engagement.
  2. Shannon Live – President and Director of Outreach at Bat City Comic Professionals – A lifelong adventurer of imaginary worlds, Shannon knew her path would someday include advocating for creativity. She co-founded Bay City as a non-profit comic bookstore that focuses on cultivating imagination skills for youth. Through seminars, resources, and workshops, her mission is to increase the use of comics in classrooms and libraries to improve writing, reading, and emotional skills through the use of the comics medium.
  3. Dom Marino – Co-Founder of Oyster Boys Conservation – After learning that a record number of Manatees died in 2021, Dom founded OBC with his brother Vince to raise awareness about the importance of water conservation and protection. He provided insights into sustainable practices and how individuals and communities can make a positive impact on the environment.
  4. Omar Edwards – Associate Director of Strategic Planning Initiatives for the School District of Manatee County – Omar concluded the event by speaking about the upbringing that has gotten him to where he is today. He was taught that you treat people how you want to be treated and do what is right, even though it may not be popular. From workshop presentations for youth empowerment to college and career readiness to volunteering in the annual toy collection and distribution, his community involvement is truly impressive.
