So, grab your favorite brew, take a seat, and delve into the inspiring journey of —
Dörte Inett.
We can start with how you landed in the furniture industry. Can you tell us about that?
Dörte Inett: At the time, I was looking for a change of pace rather than a complete shift in the industry. My first role in the furniture sector was with a company that operated with a start-up mentality and a strong focus on technology. Coming from a large corporation, I could immediately sense the dynamic, fast-moving environment, which intrigued me. I’m grateful that I followed my curiosity and leveraged my experience to transition from fashion to furniture. It was a challenging yet exciting move that allowed me to grow in new ways.
What steps did you take to become the Director of E-Commerce at MillerKnoll?
DI: I began my journey in Web Merchandising, which I believe is an excellent foundation for anyone looking to build a career in e-commerce. This role helped me develop a deep understanding of assortment performance, user behavior, and key web metrics—all of which have been invaluable as I’ve progressed. Over time, I took on increasing responsibility, starting with managing a small business. As I demonstrated creative problem-solving, leadership, and the ability to influence stakeholders, my scope expanded, and I was entrusted with overseeing larger-scale web businesses and projects.
“Opportunities often come to those who make their ambitions known.” – Dörte Inett, Director of E-Commerce at MillerKnoll
What advice would you give to younger women considering a career in the furniture industry today?
DI: Early in your career, it’s essential to showcase reliability, curiosity, and drive. If you consistently demonstrate these qualities, your leaders will be more confident in offering you greater responsibility. Be patient but also proactive. Don’t hesitate to express your goals and aspirations. Opportunities often come to those who make their ambitions known.
How important is having a network of other women as you mature in your career?
DI: A strong professional network is valuable at every career stage. Having peers to discuss challenges, share insights, and exchange learnings has been invaluable to me. While I’ve benefited from mentorship across all genders, I’ve found my female network to be especially transparent and supportive. I feel incredibly fortunate to have worked with inspiring women—leaders, mentors, and colleagues— whom I can reach out to at any time, knowing the connection remains just as strong.
